Bamboo Forest Reserve (New In 2013)

June 15th, 2013. Future exhibits.
Really nice to see a (presumably) first rate exhibit for sloth bears - the one species of bear that is underrepresented in US zoos. Of course that a new tiger exhibit is great goes without saying. The one time I was there, they were just starting construction on the jaguar exhibit. So with new jaguar and new tiger, it may even be enough to cause me to return to Seattle.

I think the Smithsonian Zoo in Washington D.C. has a first rate exhibit for sloth bears. You're right though, it is a shame that sloth bears are very underrepresented, so it's good that not only they are getting a new exhibit, but they're also breeding!

Currently, there are 39 sloth bears exhibited at 18 AZA accredited zoos. 7 were already born this year with births at the National Zoo, Woodland Park Zoo, Tautphaus Park Zoo and most recently the Brookfield zoo. So hopefully they will become more common in zoos.
