African Plains: Barbary Deer. August 13, 2021. Within only around 5 years the zoo has gone from keeping a herd of 40+ deer to only about a dozen today, all female. Sadly the males all died off, abruptly ending any hopes of continuing the population long-term. It seems there is little love for Africa's only native deer anyhow, as not once on any of my four rides on the tram over my two visits to the park has any guide even acknowledged the animals. Sometimes they don't even point out the yard at all.
