I am intrigued by the prefix (barren ground) in the name. Does that mean there is more than one kind (subspecies) of musk ox?

Yes I think there are at least three subspecies. I have seen both Barren Ground and Greenland musk ox in European zoos.

Although the Barren grounds in Europe are hybrids and Groves & Grubbs do not recognise different types of musk ox (so then there is no difference, because when they see the slightest difference in 1 specimen it is a new species....)
