The enclosure is far too small in today's world of multi-acre paddocks, and there are two female Asian elephants (ages 36 and 44) at the zoo. It will be interesting to see what this zoo does in the future, as AZA recommends keeping a minimum of 3 elephants at each zoo. There are special circumstances allowed for elephants that cannot be moved or are not compatible with others, but many zoos are worried about their accreditation and thus comply with such recommendations. Jackson Zoo in Mississippi is an example of a zoo sending away its 2 remaining elephants in order to guarantee its accreditation.
