The spectacled bears are still here. Sloth bears are elsewhere; other bears no longer in the collection.
I first saw this in 1995, and remember being appalled. Leipzig as a whole was a pretty sorry place in those days. However, there is a certain architectural charm to this, and I very much hope that it will be preserved in the future. Even as a space for one bear species, as it is now, it is clearly less-than-adequate, but for a smaller animal it could work well.
Especially for all lovers of these sorts of exhibits, I've attached a thumbnail of a picture showing the spikes that prevent Saxons from entering the bear enclosure - or bears from climbing out.
I actually didn't notice before, but am I right in thinking it's 2 seperate enclosures or did the polar bears have access to both sides?
Which ever it's still not good for bears, but I do agree that it should be kept, just not for bears, either some smaller animal as you suggested or as a display to show how well the zoo has moved on.
