Bear Pits - Built In 1921 - American Black Bear Exhibit

July 19th, 2010.
Saint Louis Zoo, already one of the 10 best zoos in North America, currently has $120 million at is disposal to make improvements. First to go are the 4 bear pits that opened in 1921, but no blueprints have been released to the public about whether the grottoes will be extensively renovated or completely demolished.

St Louis is embarking on a $120 million capital campaign---this is a long stretch from having $120 million "at its disposal." But the zoo does have a strong record of fund raising and great community support, so I'm sure in a number of years they will achieve this goal and at long last consign these pits to the historical status they so richly deserve. All reports are that it will extensively remodel/expand--but not totally demolish--these early American examples of Hagenbeck's rockwork and moat style.
