Wow! Chinese zoo enclosures not designed to be prison cells? What a relief and what a surprise! The animals can even get out of stone throwing distance - that is even better!
It is a constant reference to all the reports I have read in books, newspapers and on the internet and all the horrible tv-documentaries that I have seen over the years on how the Chinese treat animals (in zoos as well as in general).
@Dan: I have observed people throwing rocks and other items in zoos in Australia, Europe, North America, Africa and Asia; this stupid and awful practice is (unfortunately) not soley limited to the Chinese, even if "books, newspapers and on the internet and all the horrible tv-documentaries" might evoke another impression. And I have witnessed enough tv-documentaries and their craving for sensations not to trust them without reservation. My advice: go there in person-with "eyes unclouded by hate", if this subtle movie reference is permitted.
Besides where it concerns zoos in South nations (I hate the reference developing nations as if they have some intellectual capacities lacking ...) usually there is a money issue with zoo management.
Over and above it is a rather condescending and paternalistic attitude on some forumsters here who seem to think that no good comes off zoos in South nations at all. For goodness sake open your mind.
Finally, what usually appears on the internet where it pertains to these zoos it is mostly very sensationalist and zooming in on the bad aspects and never ever having anything like an even-handed treatment of the subject matter on hand or the general outlook of a given zoo.
If anything, your ignorance remains bliss(ful) bordering on arrogance.
