Those unsightly wood posts protecting the trees were removed at some point because I don't recall seeing them. @UngulateNerd92 unless they switched sides for the tigers and lions between this photo and my visits (which is possible), the old tiger exhibit is the current lion exhibit. The old lion exhibit is the current spotted hyena exhibit.
@Arizona Docent I never recognized those wooden posts in the exhibit either... I am unware of a switch, but it is certainly possible. I am glad that they moved tigers to a more geographically appropriate location.
@UngulateNerd92 Although I am not Ituri, I know they had a small and terrible sand cat exhibit when I moved to Arizona in the early 1990's. It was a cage in every sense of the word and was located next to the flamingos. It was thankfully demolished and in recent years they built a new sand cat exhibit, but it can only be viewed from inside the event building during special events. (I mean you can see the outside from a distance but I have never actually seen the cats out there). They also had a nice large ocelot exhibit which I think was torn down to build the newer orangutan exhibit. The fantastic cheetah exhibit was there, though at that time it was two side-by-side exhibits that both housed cheetahs (which they even bred once). Now the left exhibit is used for African wild dogs.
