Berlin Zoo - Hippo House

The world famous Hippo house in Berlin Zoo. The house is actually built inside two big cupols. In these cupols lives common hippos and pygmy hippos. Great exhibit, but the pygmy hippo exhibit is too small (don\'t have a picture on that, though). This is the exhibit for common hippos.

As l understand from a post by zooplantman. The water filtration system here must be huge!!

Do the hippos justify the expense of the exhibit and swim along the glass often?

Altough teh yhippos have NO bigger landpart in this exhibit, wheer they spend most of the year ? tehy have only a tiny isalnd during the day, and at night, they small stables with a hard floor behind the scenes, tahts it. I woudl call this a really poor exhibit.Or do you think, hippos are not walking around ? So why they have legs ? They raelly do, and tehy can run very very fast. In nature, hippos spend the night on land to eat, so they need also in captivity big indoor exhibits with big landparts. But I've forgot, zoos are not the nature, but I ask me, why they try to COPY nature ?

Like I wrote in another commentary, @Zebraduiker-for some people, appearance is everything. Who cares about the bare small indoor enclosure behind the scenes (whose conditions hasn't changed in the last decades...) when the visitor area looks "naturalistic"-or whatever the public currently considers as 'nature'...

Thats it, unfortunately I have to agree. And what I said, mostly older exhibits are better than new ones, so the Breslau Zoo has two outdoor exhibit for hippos, an unusasally big indoor pool and five big stalls, bigger than Franfurt,Stuttgart,Hannover(new!), and build in 1888 !!!! The hippo enclosures still have the original size ! But if an exhibit looks nice or PHANTASTIC, zoofans and the normal zoovisitor will like it. And don't forget, if a zoo has a big collection, mainly of rare animals, it must be good zoo.
