I have a theory as to what this bird is, but I am after confirmation. It was taken in a Melbourne suburb.

it is one of the butcherbirds. I haven't a field guide to hand to say which one, so off the top of my head I can't be specific.

I think maybe the grey butcherbird is the only one in Melbourne, but don't take that as a definite answer before checking

Photos of the grey butcherbird on Google Images have some as being a sort of charcoaly dark grey-black, while other photos are similar to mine. The bird I saw definitely looked brown-ish as it appears in my uploaded photo.

I'd agree with grey butcher-bird. This could just be a young one. They're quite common but a bad sign if you enjoy having other birdlife around. They're really aggressive and will chase a lot of the smaller birds away.

Agreed. A young Grey Butcherbird.

Why doesn't nanoboy have a field guide?

I do have a field guide, but as per the first post, I was not entirely sure and I want to be 100% sure before adding it to this year's list.

Do you mean that App one you were going on about? Not very good huh?

I never bought the app. :D I only had the free, lite version. My field guide is good only when I have a general idea where to start. Besides, who needs an app or a field guide when I have you guys who enjoy identifying birds? :D
