Birmingham Zoo- Primate House- Giant otter exhibit

If I remember this correctly, this walk-through exhibit used to be an aviary with a mix of mostly South American species (back around 2005!).

It was bizarre seeing otters in such a huge exhibit- an exhibit with barely any water. Despite the huge space available to the otters, one of this exhibit’s main shortcomings is its lack of a large pool.

@AndyJ08 Maybe this is a temporary holding area for them? Back when this exhibit contained birds (15+ years ago), there was a shallow pool, stream, and short waterfall. It looks like they had to gut it at some point and I hope the otters are temporary. This really used to be a nicely planted room with about half a dozen species of birds (mostly South American).

My camera wouldn’t capture the whole exhibit, but you’re right; there is a pool and stream on the other side of the boardwalk, however it isn’t very big. I think this exhibit would serve a better purpose as a walkthrough exhibit with small monkeys such as tamarins.
