Black-and-white ruffed lemur : Whipsnade : 01 Aug 2014

The male black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata), currently being introduced to simultaneous occupation of the In with the Lemurs enclosure with the bachelor group of ring-tailed lemurs.

I understand this move was prompted by the recent sad loss of his female companion, who was in her thirties. This male is 18 years old.

It will be interesting to see how this works. The last time both were mixed the ruffeds bullied the ring-tails.

Were the ring-tails out at the same as the ruffed?

Yes, all were out together. I didn't see any obvious signs of bullying - it was around a feeding time when I visited, and the ruffed seemed happy to stay on his own feeding platform.

As you say, it will be interesting to see how this works out, especially once he gets more used to the situation (I think this was only the second or third day they'd mixed them).
