Spiny tailed or black iguanas are currently common, now that this species has recieved legal protection. About two decades ago they were being severely overhunted as their meat is considered a delicacy. Tamales with iguana meat could be bought in public markets. This is no longer so, hunting iguanas is now highly regulated.
both green and black iguanas are established in south florida, including vacant lots on miami beach where there is concrete rubble from demolished facilities which gives shelter from rare freezing weather. Surprisingly, when the air temperture reaches @ 50F, all sizes of green iguanas fall from trees and bushes, the original green precipitation.
