These islands used to be a part of a South America Exhibit, which also had red howler monkey, red-backed beared saki, jaguar, tapir, ant-eater and so on. But then the zoo closed the exhibit, moved most of the south American species to off-exhibit area, only retained the islands of spider monkeys.
