For some reason, I didn\'t think there were any of these about in Europe (or captivity at all) so was uber excited to see them. Another first

I heard they were phasing them out here in the states. It's too bad! But I'm glad they're still around somewhere.

There's actually rather a healthy European population, with 44 zoos listed on Zootierliste as holding the species. Blackpool, Africa Alive and Belfast hold them within the UK.

JR - you were possibly thinking of the conspecific Bontebok, which I've only seen twice (at what is now 'Africa Alive' back in the Suffolk Wildlife Park days and at San Diego Wild Animal Park in 1998). Zootierliste currently lists just a single female at Oasys in Spain.

It was actually hirola/hartebeest I was thinking of - I was thinking of the antelope with the long face

They are brilliant, these three(1.2)came from Africa Alive by the way

An excellent candidate species for one of the UK's safari parks me thinks.
