Blue-crowned motmot (Momotus coeruliceps)

Taken on May 4, 2019
It is definitely a mot-mot. We would say blue-crowned mot-mot if we had to guess.

@ZooFuss I'm pretty sure "Blue-Crowed Motmot" isn't the awnser Daniel is looking for here. :p

It is not currently known which motmot species is in North American zoos, so I assume it is the same for European zoos?

Yes, blue-crowned is correct. This beautiful species was more widespread in zoos years ago. There are probably not many left in Europe now.

Lucky you. I've been to the aviary a couple of times on my two day visit, but failed to see it.

It was signed as Momotus momota. However, because of the recent split-up of the species into six new species, I don't know if it's a true Momotus momota (the Amazonian species).

@AWP Yeah on my 2 days visit I only saw it once, most of the birds around the kiwi house seems to be pretty shy.

@Daniel Sörensen True about the pretty shy birds around the Kiwihaus. Next to the motmot, both species of jay were on my wish list, but I had to check a couple of times to finally see the Inca jay. (on the other hand, I saw the kiwi on the first time I went to the Kiwihaus)

@AWP I got a photo of the Inca jay without even realizing until I got home and looked at the photos, oops! haha.
I've been to the park 5 times now and i never succeed to see the Kiwis!:(

M. coeruliceps doesn´t have black spot in the middle of the blue crown. This feature belongs to populations that are still called Momotus momota.
