Tropical Forest, a building that opened in 1991, is a strong contender for one of the worst exhibit complexes in any major zoo in the United States. The Lowland Gorillas have an outdoor yard that resembles a soccer field and it is thus totally inappropriate for a jungle species. The rest of the 15 or so primate species are in all-indoor enclosures that feature very little natural substrate. Most of the exhibits have lush backdrops (just like in this photo) but the actual space for the primates is human-made, mainly unyielding to the touch, and badly outdated. There are even Bornean Orangutans in an all-indoor, very dark exhibit that is just awful.
