Bonobos 1973

Ape House, Antwerp, 5th September 1973. Scanned from an Ektachrome slide.
I think the bonobo at the front is 'Kitty'.
The only bonobos in Europe in 1973 were the small breeding group at Frankfurt and three females at Antwerp. I was very keen to see them on my tour in 1973. Perhaps because there was no male with them, these three seemed rather quiet, like the all-female chimp group at Dudley. It is a great pity that they couldn't be kept with a male.

@gentle lemur I saw them circa 1968 and thought the same about the lack of a male. Presumably they might have imported one or more at some stage earlier and he/they died? By the time these females were adult, a replacement male of the right age(mature) was probably impossible to obtain.
