How is this (sub)species doing in the US ?

IMO to be honest with you, not that great. They are a phase out species in the United States. Gladys Porter Zoo is probably the only AZA zoo that currently has them, there are many in the private sector though and some of those places include Capitol of Texas Zoo, Kens Exotics, Southwicks Zoo, Tennessee Safari Park, Arbuckle Wilderness etc. I honestly dont see a good reason to phase them out, although they are not endangered, they are vulnerable and their population is decreasing, unless there is something I dont know...

In Europe it´s only kept in 3 collections and I was also the opinion it was at least vulnerable in the wild, so don´t understand why it should be phased out in the US !
Thank you for the answer and let´s hope the privat sector pays more attention to this (sub)species !
