Bornean Orangutan exhibit at Chester Zoo 31/03/12

It is very rare indeed, in 1968 I do recall Chester producing a hybrid of the sub-species. He is called Rajang and he is now at Colchester Zoo.

Both Bornean and Sumatran on separate display. That's quite rare in any zoo I'd say.

Good breeding records for both types too :)

But what a mess this enclosure is!
At first glance today I thought Iznee was curled up in a ball in the bottom left corner - then I realised it was just the roots of one of the dead conifers ;)
All apes are destructive, but Bornean orangs must be the worst - they have broken one of the corners of the grey net between the 'branches' on the left of the 'tree' since this photo was taken yesterday.

Chester have had a brilliant record for breeding both sub-species or species.

Sumatran breeding:

1983 1.0 'Sidney'
1984 0.1 dns
1985 1.0 Douglas
1986 0.1 Subis
1987 0.1 Emma
1998 1.1 Padang and Jambi
2004 1.1 Budi and Utara
2008 0.1 Indah
2009 0.1 Kirana

Bornean breeding:
2009 1.1 Iznee and Latifah

They have bred a lot more but I'm not as up to date...
