Bornean Orangutan - June 2016

@Benosaurus I have a suspicion Benji is a hybrid- his coat colour is definately like a Sumatran-his pads are more like a Bornean. I wonder what a DNA test would show...

I know Bornean orangs generally have a darker coat than Sumatrans, but is there not a range of coat shades within the Bornean species and Benji is just on the lighter end of the shade spectrum (that could happen to cross over with Sumatran shades), or are they always strictly one specific colour?

I wonder if the reason he is classed as a non-breeder is not because he doesn't breed but because a DNA test was done at some point in the past - all speculation of course.

@Benosaurus There is some variation but Borneans are normally a much darker 'maroon' colour than this. The yellowish colour on his shoulders is suspiciously similar to a Sumatran. I think his pads, although 'Bornean' in shape(hanging forward) may have some of the hairier appearance of a Sumatran too- most hybrids show a straight mixture of characteristics of the two species. I believe Duisburg did keep both species around the time he was born.

I believe he was handraised and that has somehow affected his breeding capability. I don't know if he's ever been DNA tested- presumably if my theory was correct they would have changed his listing to hybrid. Its just a little theory I have....
