Brookfield Zoo - Tropic World

July 2008. Pygmy hippo.
The pygmy hippo pool in Tropic World reminds me of the space for the same species in Omaha's Lied Jungle, although I think that Omaha's is slightly more realistic in terms of the terrain. Tropic World does have a regular rainfall, as some sort of sprinkler system opens up the heavens and pours down on the animals.

So that accounts for the slime growing on the log above this pygmy hippos head. :)

That's right Pat...haha! I was in the building when the rainstorm came pounding down and it is a spectacular sight for zoo visitors. All of the animals hid in nooks and crannies and waited until the rain stopped, and then afterwards the building was quiet once again.

Adelle was moved to the pachyderm house this summer. Tropic World no longer exhibits pachyderms.
