As I read some not really accurate notes concerning bear pits and cages in the Giardino Zoologico in Rome, I think useful to add a photo of the historic brown bear exhibit created by Hagenbeck in 1910. As you can see from the photos, it is not a pit and not really too small (bears could also utilise the dry moat). You can also see one of the small cages for bears that were created in the 30's for other bear species, and they was undubitely too small and unattractive.
