The Zoo is currently without African Hunting Dogs while their exhibit is having work done to it.
I think the plan is to bring the 2 from Whipnsade over to London and to start a new pack at Whipnsade.
I'm guessing that means the remaining pair at Whipsnade are the same sex? It's a shame how their attempts with forming a pack are going but it would be nice to see a successful group there if they can pull it off, though as other members have pointed out maybe they would be better off giving the enclosure back to wolves. Maybe this enclosure at London could suit a small group of hyenas down the line if ZSL lose faith with African Hunting Dogs?
@Rajang-GOAT The 2024 inventory lists 1 male and 1 female at Whipsnade. I have heard they are elderly (sadly I don't know the ages)
I hope they can establish a new larger pack at Whipsnade but I agree with you It was much more suited for Wolves.
I would love to see Spotted Hyena at London, they would fit so well in the "Into Africa" section next door to the Warthogs.
@Max Blundell I did think that the last I'd heard it was confirmed 1:1, though then had a realisation when I discovered the 5 females that have been at Whipsnade were in the same litter as the last 3 dogs at London that old age could very likely play a part.
It seems the female at Whipsnade was born in October 2015 (London), and the male was part of a litter born in July 2016 (West Midlands). I now completely understand why this decision is being made and hopefully there is better luck in the future at Whipsnade, maybe they will try get younger individuals this time.
@Panthera1981 That's an even better idea, can't believe I didn't think to mention them! With a stretch, they could possibly just about fit Whipsnade's geographical zones as well.
