bull elephant at SDWAP

Check out those tusks! All asian elephants, including this male, are moving from the Wild Animal Park to the Zoo for the new Elephant Odyssey opening this summer (2009). Wild Animal Park will use the asian space to expand their african elephant herd, which has around 6 or 7 calves right now and will need the space.

Would the tusks get that big in the wild?

It's possible, though in the wild I've read bulls tend to drop ivory here and there as well as their tusks continously breaking off from fighting.

Thats what l would have thought. So its actually not natural....

Now surely you are off to school:D

Is there much shading in the current paddock, and is there provision for shading in the new elephant odyssey at the zoo?

I just visited and the current paddock has tons of shading for the massive pachyderms. I know from the plans Elephant Odyssey will too. I am sure it will be a great exhibit!

and with a bull like Ranchipur should be an amazing exhibit.
