Cannot believe what you read

We all know you cannot believe everything you read or hear, even from a trusted source like San Diego Zoo. Their sign shows jaguars classified as Endangered, when in fact the latest IUCN Red List classifies them as Near Threatened, two full steps below Endangered.

I also don't know of any wild jaguars in the United States, and certainly not the northern part of it or Canada.

Am sure I watched a documentary recently that stated that there were starting to populate Central America and some of the southern states again.

Lone male jaguars still roam into southern Arizona in the United States. One was recently trapped not too far from Tucson.

That box is identifying the continents only, not it's range.

Then why not have it go further north? And that's not a good way to do that imo.

You're right, the box shouldn't be that big, but if you read the "range" listing right under continents it says "central Mexico to S. America." However, this is actually a bit too conservative, since they live in North Mexico (Sonora) and a couple males were tracked over the last decade in southern Arizona and two more were sighted in the Peloncillo Mountains of New Mexico (near the Arizona Border).

I know the guys that were working on the tracking project south of Tucson and have seen lots of the photos (we worked on some of them at the photo lab where I work) - I even use some of their photos in a wild cat slide show I do at Reid Park Zoo once a month. Very exciting stuff.

FYI - the farthest north sighting of a jaguar is from the north rim of the Grand Canyon in the early 1900's.
