Elephantulus edwardii.
This was an utter surprise. Our party of 5 nature tourists and our guide were sitting on these rocks, eating sandwiches, when this little creature appeared among us. Fortunately I had my camera ready and it stayed still while I took a few photos. Then it scurried off into a crack between the rocks, but it reappeared several times and I got more photos (although this is my favourite). Apparently these little animals shelter in cracks and in the tussocks of grass between the rocks, but then pop out to feed on insects, plus perhaps some plant matter and they even lick pollen and nectar from some flowers. I must add that it seemed to be curious about us, but otherwise undisturbed by our presence.
Needless to say, it was my favourite moment of the whole trip
@Austin the Sengi I have been searching the Gallery and I have only found one other photo labelled as an Elephantulus species, but several species are found around South Africa, and it is from a different part of the country, so I think you are correct. There are one or two images labelled just as 'elephant shrew' but I doubt whether they are the same species either.
