I visited this collection last weekend and was very impressed with this enclosure. Very simple but actually one of my favourite capybara enclosures anywhere. It was very similar to the conditions in which I've seen the species in the wild.
The rest of the zoo was a surprise though; it felt a bit as though I was walking around a collection which had already closed. On a busy summer weekend visit the only other people I saw were a couple of visitors from a great distance, and a keeper walking around with a skunk. A great surprise considering the crowds at the other nearby collections I visited the same day.
Has this always been the case?

I last visited about three years ago and, prior to that, about six or seven years ago -it was pretty much deserted on both occasions. I don't think it's relatively remote* location helps and for most either Yorkshire Wildlife Park (big animals well done) and the Tropical Butterfly House (smaller animals reasonably well done and they know how to play to their "family" market) offer a better day out.
*it doesn't look that remote on a map but it's one of the places where a large chunk of the driving's on slow single lane roads.
