Caracal Exhibit

March 4th, 2010.
This is one of the better small cat exhibits in North America, even though sadly I saw no caracals on my visit. There are rocky outcrops where the animals can rest in the sun, a small creek trickling through the enclosure, boulders, bushes, shrubs and the exhibit is over twice the size of what is shown in this photo. In fact the entire new "Predators of the Serengeti" was much better than I had anticipated, with young, active animals that definitely added to the excitement gained when opening a brand new exhibit complex.

My second visit to the zoo since the opening of the AZA award-winning "Predators of the Serengeti"...and still no caracal! The exhibit is gorgeous but now I've been to the zoo twice since the large-scale expansion and still the African cat remains frustratingly hidden from sight.
