Caribbean Hornero (Furnarius longirostris), October 2009

Great photo, but this is a Pacific Hornero (Furnarius cinnamomeus). Both this species and the Caribbean are often considered subspecies of the Pale-legged Hornero in which case the Pacific is Furnarius leucopus cinnamomeus and the Caribbean is Furnarius leucopus longirostris.

However, the Pacific Hornero is easy to recognize because it is the only hornero with very pale, almost white eyes. In all other hornero species the eyes are brownish or reddish-brown.

There is a reasonable number of Pacific Horneros in captivity. I'm not aware of any real Caribbean Horneros in captivity and the ones in Walsrode, Wuppertal and Stuttgart are all Pacific Horneros (mislabelled on zootierliste). The ones in Singapore are also Pacific.
