These Bison were introduced to Santa Catalina Island in the 1920s. They were originally for the film the Vanishing America but they escaped and ran loose on the island. The owners of the island import new females to sustain the population because they are very popular for tourists. The carrying capacity of the island is 150 bison but it is currently below 100 due to a lack a births in recent years.
