Cats

Stray cats outnumber most animals at the zoo; they can be found in many of the enclosures, whether occupied or not. Here, though, there were so many that they it was becoming difficult to walk along the path.

Is it possible for them to prey on the animals at the zoo, for example birds or small mammals? That is horrible!

I don't think they can get to most of the 'bitesize' animals, which seem to be fairly well protected. Having said that, I've noticed a significant drop in the number of budgies and finches in the past few years - I don't think the cats are responsible though.

I imagine that they are wonderful for controlling rodent populations, but it's still not pleasant to tiptoe around irritable strays on a trip to the zoo. I should point out, however, that although there is still a large number of cats at the zoo, I've never seen more than on the visit pictured here.

Another problem of course is the potential for transfering domestic cat diseases to the captive wild cats, I doubt if any are innoculated against anything? However, it is suprising how often you see feral domestic cats living in a zoo, wherever that may be.

I don't think there are any captive small wild cats at the zoo, and I seem to remember that the feral cats generally tend to keep their distance from the lions and other big cats.

Yeah, I meant that the captive cats are probably not innoculated?
Of course any diseases carried by the feral cats can transfer to any captive cats large or small and they don`t need direct physical contact either.

I don't know to be honest, but I would doubt that the cats routinely receive more than very basic veterinary care. There are charities and organisations which are trying to change this but I don't really know how far they've got to date.
