The male elephant seal did share his pool with sea-lions; I remember seeing the two species together on my first few visits to Stuttgart.
Incidentally, at one time a chimpanzee was trained to throw fish for the elephant seal at feeding time; there is a photograph from Stuttgart Zoo, depicting an elephant seal being fed by a chimp, in the book “The World of Zoos” (English Language edition, 1968). Presumably, though, this was an earlier elephant seal to the one in PeGe's photograph?
@Tim:
I think so, as there were more:

and

So there should have been Tristan, Isolde, Sammy and Charlie?
Maybe somebody can very or correct this idea?
The second video has to show the bull before charlie, as Charlie was smaller.
It's death in 1996 given here could be right.
@Baldur:
he was kept with sealions as Time said,
i don't know when he died exactly, but there's a display cabinet in the aquarium showing the reasons:
keys, koins, toys,...thrown in the pool. http://www.fotocommunity.de/pc/pc/display/22618744
