Chester Zoo Memories
For nostalgic ZooChat members another old photo of Chester Zoo.... Old pictures bring on a feeling of warm nostalgia. Species no longer kept, lost enclosures, lost corridors. I thought it might be nice if members added them with the title 'Chester Zoo Memories' to make searching easier... What do you think? I'll be adding more Memories over time. This is a picture of the [1968] Ape House viewing gallery taken in March 1993.
To expand on zoogiraffe's answer. The windows on the left look over the indoor accommodation that is still used for the Bornean orang utans (the Blackpool group, the male Tuan and the females and young who have access to the outdoor enclosures visible from RotRA, which you could view through the window at the end of corridor, if it were still there). The windows on the right would overlook the small-clawed otter and babirusa exhibit. The orangs' sleeping dens are under the floor of this gallery.
I've not yet been to Chester (something I hope to remedy before too long), but the atmosphere in this photograph, the way the light hits the wall, it just so evocative. Reminds me of quiet visits at the end of the day to the Giraffe House at London.
