That's not a Sumatran is it? It looks a little different. Heard they had a Bengal between Amur and Sumatran, is this true? If so, do you know which one this is?

This is either Rani or Kali the bengal sisters who had a holiday at Chester when the last Amur male at Chester died and WMSP ran out of space. They arrived in April 06 and left in September 08 to go back to West Midlands. Chester received a male Sumatran named Kepala from Dudley in May 07. When the sisters went back home Chester's current female Sumatran, Kirana moved up from Paignton Zoo. Unfortunatly Kepala is a full sibling to Kirana's mother, Banda. Hence in January 09 Kepala left for Dublin Zoo and Fabi arrived from Prague as a partner for Kirana.
Hopefully the next chapter of Chester's tiger history will be a litter of cubs!
I hope so. I seem to remember seeing a pair of Amur Tiger cubs at Chester when I was young (would of been around the late 90's, possibly early naughties). They were adorable, but I'd love to see some Sumatran Cubs in a year or two

Ahh, they are good ages for tigers aren't they? I think the average is about 16 years. Did they have any more? I have a photo that I took of a cub, but I wasn't born until 1991 so they'd have been fully grown by the time I got around to handling a camera. Unless I'm thinking of the lion cubs I took a photo of when I was young? Did they have any cubs a little later on, somewhere either side of 1995?

No more tiger cubs after 1989. The Chester pair where deemed surplus, so the male was castrated and kept with his sister. The father Omu was rumoured to be the largest Amur ttiger in captivity at the time. The mother was called Natasha. Where the mother and father went to is a mystery to me, as I only ever encounted the 2 siblings in my time of visiting the zoo.
Lion cubs born in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2007 (hand-reared), 2008 (euthanised)
Chester's breeding male Asiatic lion (Jake) was moved to France in 2000 where he died not long after arriving. His mate Chandani stayed on at Chester until her death in 2005 but she wasn't bred again due to having 14surviving cubs! The 1998 litter was 2:1. Masala, the female was moved to Spain in 2000 but her brother's Naseek and Asoka stayed on until 2003 and 2010 respectivly. Asoka became Chester's breeding male but only sired 1:0 surviving cub. This was Tejas from the 2007 litter of 2:0. His brother died at just a few days old. Tejas is doing well at Besancon and has recently been intergrated with one of the zoo's two females.
