Chillingham cattle, cow and master bull

Chillingham Park, Northumberland, 15th July 2005
Great shots. I have several postcards of them but no personal souvenir like this. The bull looks like he is 'hooting' a challenge.

You can see the reddish hair of the ears in these photos. The Chillinghams are significantly different in appearance from those four other herds of Wild Park cattle (and far more wild too)

Yes, the bull was taking an interest in this cow, I think he considered she might be coming into season. As I explained in the thread I had a privileged view of the herd.

I'm sure these are as close to Aurochs as you can get, but they're small in comparison.

The Aurochs must have been a massive beast. For Julius Caesar to compare them to elephants (and the form that he was probably thinking about was Loxodonta cyclotis) suggests an animal that must have matched, or probably exceeded Gaur in size.

I would think their shape and profile is very similar to Aurochsen, but not the colour obviously. I believe Chillinghams are also smaller in overall body-size than any of the other 4 semi-feral British 'Wild' White cattle herds. There is quite a big difference genetically between the Chillinghams and the others I think.

I have to say, that at my first sight of the animals these days known as "Heck Cattle", I was disappointed. They looked to me like Spanish fighting bulls - which I suppose they are in part.
