Chimp cage at Belfast Summer 2007

This cage is part of the old Belfast Zoo. It is not the original chimpanzee cage and was built towards the end of the old zoo's existence. It later held Clouded Leopards offshow (where they bred) and has been used as a holding facility since. You can see a Black Spider Monkey in the top left. This animal was pending export to Twycross Zoo.

This photo is too priceless, and I've given up resisting the urge to comment upon it. A classic example of how zoos have progressed over the decades, as this is a great example of how NOT to showcase animals.

This enclosure is no longer in use. We are unique in alot of ways as alot of our old zoo is still standing in some form.

What happened to the clouded leopards and when were they housed here?

This is off-show and is, as Al said, part of the old zoo. Do not worry, the rest of Belfast zoo is NOTHING like this, it is a good, very valuable zoo with many very good exhibits.

Thank -you Doddy,

we kept two pairs of clouded leopards around 7 years ago as we held the stud-book for the species at the time. The were housed off show for a while as a new enclosure was being built for them in the new zoo. They had four kittens in total I believe at least one went to america, one to france and one to satiago rare leopard project. The male unfortuantely killed the female and it was decided to go out of the species and concentrate on golden cats.

Great thanks. Shame, they're awesome (not that there's anything wrong with the golden cats:))
