@Cat-Man - They were outdoor enclosures with large shade structures over the top. The shade structures were specifically designed to filter light to a similar level as to what would reach the forest floor in a natural rainforest, as the animals were initially experiencing a lot of eye and skin problems due to an over exposure to light.
There's already been an excellent answer, but I will post an image of the shade structures so that you get a sense of their size and how it really is an outdoor exhibit.
Thanks both for your answers. The use of shade makes sense; I know Malayan Tapirs in Australia have had major issues with their eyes and skin as a result of sunlight exposure.
What were the indoor quarters like? Was their public viewing? I would suspect that they had to spend a significant amount of time in them due to Ohio's freezing winters!
