Question for Cleveland Zoochatters: does the Cleveland Zoo still have hippos or did these exhibits get demolished when the new elephant exhibit was built?

I'm not from Cleveland (thank God), but I do know that they don't have hippos on display and this is now part of African Elephant Crossing. Last I heard, they keep one hippo, Blackie, off exhibit and away from the public due to old age. This may be outdated info (late 2012) but there is no word on whether Blackie has passed.

This area is now the night yard of the new elephant crossing. Its a real shame that hippos were cut from the original plans cutting its budget by 10 million.

Thanks Team Tapir. The same thing happened to the LA Zoo's elephant exhibit which was originally supposed to have a new hippo exhibit built along with it.
Was this the exhibit for Blackie or for Mushka (the pygmy)?
Such a shame that warthogs, tapirs, and hippos are gone. I was scared of hippos because of a picture of one I saw on the Zoo website that looked menacing, to tell the truth. I saw the pygmy go in to its off-show area. A pygmy swam up to the glass at Lincoln Park Zoo when I visited Illinois in 2010. I went in the Pachyderm only once, during the Trunk Party. I vaguely remember a capybara in there. Why would there be a capybara in there, and was there a capybara? I know they are now in the Rain Forest with the anteater.

A capybara? I was there for Trunk Party as well, and all I saw were the elephants and Blackie. The Pachyderm building was home to Red river Hogs in either late 2006 or early 2007. Maybe that's what you saw. The capybaras were always in the Rainforest. And no, this was Blackie's yard. Mushka's was closer to the building's exit with the Mastodon sculpture. Mushka's exhibit was home to the tapirs after she died. I didn't see her yard at TP due to the Mastodon being removed, the back deck was taped off.

Capybaras were housed in the zoos main building 1909-1977 and for a little while in the Primate and Cat building in the early 80's.It is possible they resided for a hot minute in the Pachyderm Building during the 1980's.Its tough to recall but I have a vague recollection of them inside the building at some point. They have been exhibited in the Rainforest since its opening in 1992.
