The Bird Discovery Centre and Lory Loft walk in aviary first opened in 1999 as a single exhibit called Jungle Jewels, a South American rainforest-themed display featuring several species of hummingbirds, as well as small passerines like tanagers and honeycreepers. The Bird Discovery Centre was an indoor gallery with individual small glass-fronted aviaries that each held a single species.
The hummingbirds proved difficult to sustain and died out quickly. The tanagers and honeycreepers remained and were later joined by other South American species like cardinals, conures and amazons.
The indoor gallery was subsequently turned into a museum-like display of bird-related specimens - the Bird Discovery Centre, while the walk in aviary underwent its final transformation in 2020 to become Lory Loft.
