Collared Lizard

June 26 2024
I agree that it's a type of collared lizard, but I think it's one of the species from Madagascar. I think that this an Oplurus cuvieri which is commonly called the Madagascar Collared Iguana. It's one of the Madagascar iguanas and is sort of an ecological equivalent to the collared lizards (genus Crotophytus) that we have in America, and are even part of the same family of lizards. The Madagascar Collared Iguana has more pronounced banding on the body, and a spiny tail, but we can't see the tail in this photo. The American collared lizards have a wider head than the ones from Madagascar, which is why I don't think that this is one of American species.
