Fantastic photo @David Matos Mendes!! Were these difficult to see? On exhibit?
Now that Pampas Cat has been split, I believe this is the first photo of Central Chilean Pampas Cat (Leopardus colocola) on zoochat! Very exciting and a zoo I hope to visit later this year
@Giant Eland
Thank you. This individual was actually just leaving the handling quarters when I arrived at the exhibit, so it was quite easy to see it. He came down the logs as I passed by and was quite active for some seconds... It was a misty and very cold day in Santiago (at least for this southeastern brazilian standards) so maybe that had an effect on his behavior.
I wasn't aware that this is possibly the first picture of the colocolo after the taxonomic split. I might have to add more of my registers of the braccatus we keep here in Belo Horizonte then!
The colocolo have been held at Santiago zoo since various cats were rescued from the great forest fires in Chile in 2017. They might have more than one and perhaps have bred them.
I thought Las Leyendas kept colocolo. I saw the individual(s) for a very brief moment when I was there, so I don't remember well. It's interesting to know it was actually another species.
In Brazil, you can find braccatus in Sorocaba, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Gramado and Brasília.
Is M'Bopicua that much of a good zoo? I might give it a chance next time I put my feet in Uruguay.
@David Matos Mendes Would be surprised if Leyendas kept colocolo, since they're found in central Chile.
Meanwhile, garleppi is a match visually and is found throughout Peru, so I'm pretty confident about it. Signs at zoos are may be out of date and just have Leopardus colocola as the scientific name.
