Cologne Zoo - Meerkat exhibit

The large and luxurious exhibit for slender-tailed meerkats in Cologne Zoo, Germany. This exhibit is approx. 500 sqm or 5380 sq ft. in size and provides a very nice habitat for the meerkats. Visitors can observe the meerkats from above and in eye level.
I have heard various explanations about the weird cloth structures in this exhibit but still to this day do not know their use.

its for the rain, the ground can be wet and it can make all their tunnels to collapse (like what happend in my zoo) so those wierd umbrellas are against the rain....and it rains alot in Cologne

Are you absolutely sure? They only cover a small fraction of the exhibit and they do not stop it from raining in from the sides. Also, in case of rain it seems to me that they will just work like a couple of funnels?

yes, thats what they told me......its for the rain......i can ask if you want:)

Shai.

It makes sense that they're for the rain. Otherwise you could just put any old roof up for shade but this design will stop anything running of them as well but it seems stupid to only have such a small area covered. :)
