Columbus Zoo - Sun Bear Exhibit

July 2008. Terrific, multi-level enclosure for the world's smallest bears.

This is a spacious exhibit for the zoo's sun bears, and it is larger than what is shown in the photo. There are loads of hiding area, climbing opportunities and enrichment placed all around the outdoor habitat.

This is one of the best Sun Bear exhibits in the country. Other great ones that I can remember off the top of my head are San Diego, Oakland, and Miami.

Don't forget Honolulu Zoo. Out of all the zoos mentioned, Honolulu Zoo probably has the most natural of all Sun Bear Exhibits. The bears are actually allowed to climb some real trees and the whole exhibit has tall grass with steep hills. The only problem is that the fence does not allow great viewing.

I was so mad that I forgot to take pics of the exhibit.
Here is a link that shows some pics of the exhibit. http://www.honoluluzoo.org/enrichment_sun_bear.htm

Fantastic exhibit.

It's been a long time since I last visited, but one of the things I never forgot was seeing a Sun Bear huddled up on a branch, curling its tongue downwards, straight out. :)
