Penscynor Wildlife Park - 1983

Found in a batch of old negatives, this is a photo of a chimpanzee at Penscynor Wildlife Park (Parc Bywyd Gwyllt Pensgynor), which was located near Neath in South Wales, and closed in 1998.

Most (all?) the chimps at Penscynor had behavioural issues, not surprising given what I remember about their enclosures, but ended up being rehoused at Cefn-yr-Erw.

I remember it well . I think the original breeding male - Brooke - the first chimp to be bred at Twycross - drowned in the moat . The enclosure was eventually covered in a metal cage , similar to Howletts Gorillas . When Penscynor closed the cage framework was moved with the chimps to Cefn-yr-Erw .

I remember seeing this enclosure as it is in the photograph, with hotwires. There was a second cage that backed onto this one which was a more traditional, sturdily built affair with three solid sides. The Mandrills had a very tall cage nearby and I seem to remember that their indoor quarters were inside the Chimp house.

The second cage at the back that Paradoxurus refers to was also originally open-top . It was from this that many escapes occurred before it had a cage front and top added . Unfortunately some of the chimps that escaped were shot . The tall cage was originally a 'Chimp Nursery' cage .

Would I be right in stating that moat-drownings are the single most common cause of accidental death in captive chimps? And still zoos insist on using water moats for fear of offending visitors´sensibilities by using other enclosure types.I can never get over this.

Penscynor lost its first breeding male chimp - Brooke from Twycross - who drowned in this moat .
