A lovely species, but like almost all guenons doomed in Europe.

I don't think there are any others at all.

Saint Martin la Plaine Zoo, France, holds this subspecies [not sure how many; perhaps only 1 or 2]. I wonder if there's been any contact between the Owl & Monkey Haven and the French zoo, to see if the Isle of Wight specimen can be paired up?

Tallinn Zoo keeps a female of this species. The animal on the picture is a male so maybe these two can be paired. According to zootierliste.de Saint Martin la Plaine breeds the species.

This individual is quite elderly, this being why Twycross sent him away to OMH, so I suspect he will be beyond successful breeding.

This is a very nice collection all round, incidentally, and one which I intend to watch with interest - I would not be surprised if a few more of the dead-end taxa at Twycross end up retiring here.

If it was a female I'd discount it breeding-wise on age, but not a male necessarily. I believe that before it went to Twycross this monkey was a pet, either in the UK or somewhere in the Middle East, or both. If there are a few others in Europe its a pity he couldn't have been paired before but obviously with so few that's not easy.

The only think I'm confused about is the Latin subspecies name 'whitesidei' used here. Is this correct, as a pair of 'Whiteside's Guenons' were sent from Twycross to a zoo in France(St Martin La Plaine?) some years ago to join a larger breeding group. If this animal is the same subspecies I'm surprised he didn't go too.

I believe Twycross have also sent Javan Langurs here as well. It would be a perfect retirement home for a few of their other elderly non-breeders and singletons too -if they have the room to take them. Cue; Diana, Roloway, Swamp Monkey to name a few.

This classification is indeed correct; one can only imagine he was not sent with them for husbandry reasons - possibly due to his prior status as a pet making him unsuitable?

Twycross have indeed sent Javan Langurs here, and Howletts have sent a large number of animals here - including Depigmented Surili, Siamang and Mt Kenya Guereza. Currently I think the collection is at capacity, but they own land surrounding the site and thus have room to expand - currently a large development is being constructed for Barbary Macaques. This, along with the elderly status of some of the species at the collection, means I doubt it will be long before they have room to go into other species.

Do you know any more about this animals history ? You mention he may have been a "pet" in the UK ? The reason I ask is that I worked with an adult male of this species in a private animal sanctuary in the UK in 1992/93, at that time he was the only one of his species in the UK and the owner refused to send him to another collection outside of the UK to breed, and they refused to send their female to the UK ! So he remained at the collection but it is highly likely that he could have gone to Twycross ?
I would be very interested to know any more about him ??

From Twycross I have found out the following from their records - "Djebra" was estimated to have been born around 1994/95, he was found in a private collection (possibly in Israel ?) and was "rescued" by the Monkey Park in Israel, he then went to Twycross in 2001, and then onto Monkey & Owl Haven in 2010.
So that clears up my question about this particular animal but I still don`t know what happened to the other male Whiteside`s Guenon that I worked with in 1992/93 at the private sanctuary in the UK ??
