This is male "Mai" , in March 1994. He was born at San Antonio Zoo in August 1979, he went to Portland, before coming over to the UK - to Howletts in 1983. He then went to Guilsborough Grange in March 1991 before moving to Santago in Nov 1991.
Tragically he killed his mate , female "Pamang" in 1992. She was in oestrus and jumped up onto the branch "Mai" occupied, as such "invading his space" , she then jumped back down where-upon he jumped down on top of her though, not to mate, in attacking her he inflicted a severe bite to her neck. She died several days later despite veterinary care from damage to the vertebrae and main nervous system which caused some paralysis to her back legs.
A sad story, he was kept on his own thereafter. He was a tractable animal, he always showed himself for visitors and would take food from your hand. He was the first Clouded Leopard I ever saw in complete full view and he was a stunning animal.

They are a bloody gorgeous species, and one I wish was more common in collections.
