Wow, fab shot. Having had over eight dolphin sightings on the boat to and from Lundy this year, I've learned capturing dolphins breaching with the camera is one of the hardest things to photograph!
There is a secret. Don't go round the area, wait at Chanonry Point (between Fortrose and Rosemarkie on the Black Isle) when the tide is rising in mid to late summer and your chances are very good. Other viewing points and a selection of boat trips are available, but the best salmon fishing for the dolphins seems to be at the Point and they often come very close inshore. On a good day it is the most exciting wildlife spectacle that I know in the UK.
I go for a few days each summer, many visitors from all over Europe do the same and a dedicated band of Scottish dolphin watchers are regulars year round.

Yes, indeed. I have taken thousands of photos of patches of sea, splashes, blurs, odd fins, flukes and even noses. I don't care. I have a handful of nice photos like this one. I am rather proud of them although I have seen many better shots from other photographers.
I'm also a little jealous of your seeing dolphins off Lundy
its not dolphins, but have you heard about this: Shear Madness of Mid Wales! - BirdForum ? It would be right up your alley me-thinks. I wouldn't know which way to point my binoculars! A couple of youtube videos on the thread which should definitely be watched.

Thank you! I will have to check this out next year (provided it fits with the tides on the Black Isle). I don't know that area at all, but Cardigan Bay is the other main bottle-nosed dolphin area in the UK. I have seen large numbers of Manx shearwaters resting offshore near the Pembrokeshire Islands and the gannetry at Grassholm is amazing, from a distance the whole island looks like it's covered with snow in midsummer. The really interesting thing is that such an impressive list of species comes so close inshore. I'd love to be able to post photos in a year's time
