One from 2 pairs housed in the aviaries mostly housing lories and lorikeets . All birds were active and vocal . As these aviaries are built of brick and solid mesh , escape is not a problem . Lovely to see this species in the UK again .

not necessarily, it could be to prevent someone breaking in rather than the bird out.
I once ran an aviary at the park I worked in on Tyneside, you would be surprised at how many people, usually school girls on a lunch break it has to be said, tried to cut the wire to allow the birds out , - budgies and small finches - so they could be free.
It's double meshed to prevent birds from getting to eachother from adjoining aviaries. It's not double meshed at the front, for the record. Not sure woodpeckers in a wooden aviary would be a good idea
