Orang outdoor enclosure

Exactly. Twycross Zoo is my local zoo and I visit regularly. I believe the Twycross enclosure to be small, however they do spend a lot of time on the ground yes. Even a Chester where visitors are put into the tree tops the orangs are always on the ground.

since the new house(ROTRA) opend at Chester, the Orangs do climb and make good use of the equipment, but they also still use the ground a lot too. Unfortunately smaller exhibits like Twycross,Blackpool etc don't really encourage them to climb a lot- there's usually more of interest on the ground.

Exhibiting Orangutans well is really still very difficult. I think only Paignton in the UK have really achieved it with their outdoor island. Chester is better indoors but not so good outside.

I actually never saw any orangs on the ground at Blackpool, I think one may have been on the floor for a short while but that was about it.

They do use the floor a lot in all these smaller exhibits. That's not to say the extra climbing equipiment isn't beneficial too.

I have to admit, i was disappointed when i saw this enclosure. having only seen chesters orangs in previous and coupled with the fact that i made my way around the massive and lavish natural looking gorilla island. im sure when i went the moat was filled in a little. might be drained or might be me imagining things.

I saw non of the orangs on the floor when i visited, they were all climbing or putting hay on their heads looking like blonde orangutans :P
